What Two-Shot (2K) Injection Molding Is
Two-shot molding — also called 2K, double-shot, or two-color molding — injects two different materials into a single mold across two sequential shots. The first shot forms a substrate; the mold then rotates or indexes and a second material is injected directly onto it, chemically or mechanically bonded in the same cycle. The result is one finished part combining two resins or two colors, produced without gluing, welding, or downstream assembly. It is the right process whenever a part needs a hard structural body and a soft-touch surface, two colors with a clean parting line, or a sealed multi-material interface.
- Hard/soft combinations: rigid housing with a TPE grip or gasket
- Two-color parts with crisp, repeatable color boundaries
- Integrated seals and gaskets molded onto a structural substrate
- Elimination of secondary bonding, alignment, and assembly steps
LongTeam's 2K Capability and Process
Two-shot molding is one of LongTeam's flagship capabilities, supported end to end under one roof — in-house mold design, tooling, and 2K injection molding through to assembly. We engineer the substrate-to-overlay bond at the design stage, selecting compatible resin pairs and validating adhesion before tooling is cut, which is where most 2K programs succeed or fail. Our injection presses range from 80 to 850 tonnes, covering small precision components through larger multi-material assemblies. Material pairings are matched to the application — representative combinations include rigid engineering resins with thermoplastic elastomers for soft-touch and sealing functions, with the optimal grade confirmed per application.
- In-house 2K mold design and tooling — bond geometry engineered before cutting steel
- Press range 80–850 tonnes for small precision to larger multi-material parts
- OEM and ODM: from your file or co-developed from concept
- Resin-pair compatibility validated up front to ensure repeatable adhesion
Why Two-Shot Molding Matters to Your Bottom Line
For sourcing managers and design engineers, 2K molding removes an entire layer of cost and risk. Bonding two materials in one cycle eliminates secondary assembly labor, adhesive consumables, and the fixturing and inspection that separate-part assembly requires. It can also reduce a common field-failure mode of assembled parts — delamination at a glued or snap-fit joint — because the bond is formed in the melt. Fewer operations means a shorter, more controlled supply chain and tighter part-to-part consistency across high volumes.
- Lower total part cost: no glue, no assembly line, no bonding fixtures
- Higher reliability: in-cycle molecular/mechanical bond helps resist delamination
- Consolidated BOM and supply chain — one part number, one supplier
- Consistent cosmetic and functional quality at production volume
Quality, Certifications, and Sectors Served
LongTeam holds ISO 9001, IATF 16949 for automotive, and ISO 13485 for medical devices — so 2K parts can be qualified for regulated programs, not just commercial ones. Two-shot components are common across the sectors we serve: automotive interior trim and sealed switches, medical and aesthetic device housings with soft-touch grips, consumer and household products, and electronics enclosures. We export to the US, Japan, Europe, India, and Southeast Asia and support the documentation regulated buyers require.
- ISO 9001 — quality management
- IATF 16949 — automotive production parts
- ISO 13485 — medical device manufacturing
- Automotive, medical and aesthetic, consumer and household, and electronics applications
